What Conscious Companies Look Like

Meghan and Maren began Conscious Company Magazine to get the word out on the amazing work people are doing in the sustainable business realm, which is at times insular. They decided to create a print magazine to expand the world of sustainable business and bring these ideas to a more diverse group of people. One of the biggest challenges in starting Conscious Company Magazine, as with any start-up business, was raising the initial investment capital. Meghan and Maren share how they were able to do so by connecting to networks such as impact investing groups, alumni associations and industry groups. In this interview, Meghan and Maren also talk about the lack of and need for female investors in the U.S. and the potential opportunity for more female investing groups to exist.

One of the most valuable lessons these two inspiring women share is to find a key partner when working as an entrepreneur, aligning yourself with people who can help your cause and integrating more feminine qualities into leadership such as being able to manage complexities, multi-task, nurture, and have empathy and compassion.

About Meghan and Maren

In 2014, Maren Keeley and Meghan French Dunbar co-founded Conscious Company Magazine

— the first print and digital, internationally distributed print publication in the US that focuses solely on business as a force for good. The inaugural issue of the publication hit stands nationwide in January 2015 through every Whole Foods Market in the US, and has since been picked up by the likes of Target, Barnes & Noble, HEB, Publix, Sprouts, Natural Grocers, and more. Prior to their foray into the publishing world, Keeley was a chef for nearly 15 years, running her own catering business, and then managing large teams at two Whole Foods Market’s flagship locations, while French Dunbar spent nearly a decade in project management and strategic development in the nonprofit world and was Managing Editor of two nationally distributed publications.
